When the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum opened in 1972, the authorities decided to turn it over to a hockey team. In the same year, the World Hockey Association and the New York Raiders team playing there were founded, and it was they who wanted to receive this arena. However, the owners of the arena considered the WHA league to be an amateur league, so it was not awarded to them and they believed that it should be given to an NHL team. Then-NHL president Clarence Campbell decided to expand the league due to the creation of the WHA. He granted rights to New York and Atlanta. The new team from New York received the nickname Islanders and the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The new team became a rival to the New York Rangers.
Since the club's founding, the team has played its games at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale near New York. In October 2012, the club signed an agreement, as a result of which, from 2015, the Islanders will move to the Barclays Center, located in the Brooklyn district of New York (the term of the agreement is 25 years).
