New York Islanders - an American ice hockey club based in New York, playing in the NHL.
The team is affiliated with a farmer's club in the lower league. This function is performed by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the AHL league. In the past, the Pensacola Ice Pilots team from the ECHL also played a minor role.
The club was founded in 1972 and joined the NHL in the same year.
When the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum opened in 1972, the authorities decided to turn it over to a hockey team. In the same year, the World Hockey Association and the New York Raiders team playing there were founded, and it was they who wanted to receive this arena. However, the owners of the arena considered the WHA league to be an amateur league, so it was not awarded to them and they believed that it should be given to an NHL team. Then-NHL president Clarence Campbell decided to expand the league due to the creation of the WHA. He granted rights to New York and Atlanta. The new team from New York received the nickname Islanders and the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The new team became a rival to the New York Rangers.
